How to borrow money online safely

Avoid scams and find FCA-authorised lenders. Learn the safe way to apply online.

Last Updated

Most people now apply for loans online, because it’s quick and convenient. Criminals know this too. Their scams copy real lenders closely and can be hard to spot.

At Payday UK, we only work with FCA-authorised lenders and never charge you a fee. If you’re thinking of borrowing online, this guide shows you how to tell a real lender from a fraud.

How to avoid scams online when applying for a loan

Scammers copy real lenders closely, so instinct alone won't catch them. These eight checks will. Run through them before you apply anywhere. Each one is quick, and together they make a scam much harder to miss.

Apply now

One application searches our panel of FCA-authorised lenders instead of applying to each in turn, so there is one search on your file rather than several.

Enter an amount in pounds, from £50 to £5,000.

Will I be approved?

Checking your eligibility uses a soft search only, so it will not affect your credit score.

Red flags to look out for when applying for a loan online

Scammers and illegal lenders tend to follow the same patterns. Knowing what to look for saves you stress, and potentially serious money.

Upfront fee requests

Any request for money before you've received your loan is a scam. It doesn't matter how it's dressed up: insurance, a processing charge, a security deposit, an admin fee.

Pressure to decide immediately

Real lenders want you to understand what you're signing. Scammers create false urgency with messages like "this rate expires in one hour" or "last loan available today." Legitimate offers don't vanish in minutes. You should never feel rushed.

They contacted you first

Did they text, call, message you on social media, or email you out of the blue? That's not how legitimate lending works. We don't cold-call, and neither do real, FCA-authorised lenders. We’ll only email or text you about an application you’ve made. Unsolicited "loan" offers on Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp or dating apps are a common route for scammers to find new victims.

Guaranteed approval, no checks

If a site says they offer guaranteed approval no matter what, it’s too good to be true. Be wary of any site that promises a loan with no credit checks at all. These kinds of promises are impossible for a legitimate lender to make. FCA rules require affordability checks on every application. If there are no checks, it’s an illegal lender. There are still legitimate ways to get a loan with a poor credit history.

Poor spelling, grammar or a rough-looking website

Genuine UK lenders invest in professional, well-written websites. Spelling mistakes, strange grammar, broken links or a site that looks thrown together overnight are common signs of a scam. That's especially true of sites based overseas and impersonating a UK brand.

No paperwork or vague terms

A genuine lender gives you clear written terms before you commit, including details about interest, repayments, and charges. If you're offered a loan with no paperwork and nothing in writing, walk away. You have no protection if something goes wrong.

Requests for your passport, bank card or photos of your home

Be wary of anyone who asks for photos of your home, or for your passport or bank card to keep. Loan sharks have used these to intimidate borrowers who fall behind. A genuine lender checks your ID through its secure application form.

Unusual payment methods

Scammers often ask for fees by bank transfer to a personal account, gift vouchers, or cryptocurrency. No legitimate UK lender asks you to pay this way. These methods are hard to trace, and almost impossible to get refunded. Genuine lenders take repayments by a traceable method, such as direct debit or debit card, set out in your agreement.

How to recognise safe loan companies

The clearest way to spot safe loan companies is to combine every check in this guide. Don’t rely on just one. A genuinely safe lender or broker is listed on the FCA register. Its name and reference number match its website exactly. They'll run a secure site with a padlock and HTTPS. They'll never ask for money upfront. A legitimate lender will carry out proper affordability checks and give you clear written terms before you sign.

It's also worth understanding who you're dealing with. Some companies lend their own money directly. Others, like Payday UK, are brokers who match you with FCA-regulated lenders from a panel. Both can be safe. Knowing the difference helps you know who to contact if something goes wrong. Our guide to lenders vs brokers explains this in more detail.

Common questions

Is it safe to borrow money online?

Yes, if you check the lender first. Confirm they're on the FCA register, look for a secure website, and never pay a fee upfront.

What should I do if I've already paid an upfront fee?

Stop any further payments straight away. Report it to Report Fraud on 0300 123 2040. If you shared bank details, contact your bank too.

Are loan apps safe?

They can be, but only if the company behind them is regulated like any other lender. The app itself doesn't need separate approval. The firm operating it does. Before you download anything, check the developer's name against the FCA register. Read reviews on the App Store or Google Play in full, not just the star rating. Look at what permissions the app asks for.

Be cautious of apps that want more access than a loan application needs. Examples include your full contacts list, photos or call logs. A legitimate loan app explains why it needs each permission. It links back to a proper company website, with full FCA details, a complaints procedure and a physical UK address.

What is the FCA?

FCA stands for Financial Conduct Authority, the UK regulator for financial firms, including banks, brokers and lenders. It sets the rules on everything from affordability checks and fee caps to interest charges and how firms treat customers. It can fine or shut down anyone who breaks them. If a lender isn’t on the register, it has no legal right to lend to you. If the details don’t match, it may be a clone firm. Don't apply and don't hand over your details.

Borrowing money online doesn't have to be risky. A genuine FCA-authorised lender won't rush you, and won't ask for money upfront. You can check them in a few minutes on the FCA register. Run through these checks before you apply, and you can borrow with confidence, knowing exactly who you're dealing with. Ready to explore your options? The lenders on our panel run a soft search, which won’t affect your credit score.
